Language Day

We had a fantastic day with lots of different languages being taught across the school. Children were able to learn languages spoken by some of our families, such as Arabic, Latvian, Urdu, French, Pashto, Turkish and Farsi.

A big thank you to all the parents who supported us with these lessons. It was great to learn another language through various games and activities.

Have a look at the photos below and please leave a comment, telling us what you really enjoyed on Language day.

What words have you learnt?

Black History

Black Olympian Athletes was the theme of our Black History Month assembly for Key Stage 2.

Sam Kalubowila from the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre delivered the assembly and also did workshops for Year 5 on Jesse Owens, an American athlete, who specialized in the sprints and the long jump.

Our school has also been invited to take part in a Black British Olympians Book Project with other schools in Manchester. Our Year 6 pupils are researching and writing interesting biographies about athletes which they hope will be included in the book when it is published. We will keep you informed :-)

Urdu Language Day

We had a fantastic day with Urdu language lessons taking place in every class across the school! These sessions were led by parents, teaching assistants and lunchtime organisers and were supported by some of our Urdu speaking children in Key Stage 2. We all learnt lots of Urdu words/phrases. Can you remember what shukriya means?

To learn more Urdu words and phrases go to the website www.newburypark.redbridge.sch.uk/langofmonth/

Some parents have already told us that their children are using Urdu more at home now. This is great to hear as the more proficient children are in their first language the better their English language development will be.

Parents can help their children at home by:
*Giving them the opportunity to read a range of texts in their first language.
*Making some time every evening to discuss with their children, in their first language, what they have done in school that day e.g. ask your child to talk about a science experiment they have done, explain how they solved a maths problem etc. Urdu language day on PhotoPeach
